1a Inverness Place

madeinroath have been resident at 1a Inverness Place – an empty shop just off Albany Road – since March 2018. This is the first time that madeinroath have had ‘official’ premises, and it has enabled us to consider new ways of working, and to offer artists the space to develop ideas within the context of a lively, vibrant and diverse community.

Our Residencies

Over the last six months, through our artist in residence programme, 1a has been transformed into a community hub, and also (temporarily) a museum, an indigo dying/textile studio, a tea room, a portrait studio, a sound recording booth and a workshop space for the PROCESSIONS project in July.

We’re delighted to introduce our latest artist in residence at 1a: Alex Goodman.

Alex is a Bristol based artist who makes performance, print and produces site specific projects. Her work celebrates the liminal, the lost and the tidal. She is interested in how language and relationship to place reflect the navigation of our everyday lives.

Shaun (aka @thingsinthestudio) will be taking over our Instagram @madeinroath for the next couple of weeks as part of his Overlap project for madeinroath Festival 2018, working with James Cocks (@jpcocks1), Hannah Morris (@hannahmmorris_) and Helen Clifford.

Made in Spring

1a and the Festival

In the run-up to, and during the festival, the focus at 1a will be on printmaking. Cardiff based artist Shaun James will be using 1a to develop new work in collaboration with invited artists, which will then be shown during the festival at The Gate. During festival week, Bristol-based artist and printmaker Alex Goodman will be running community print sessions, inviting visitors to create their own text-based artwork as part of the festival. Call in and try your hand at some traditional block printmaking (see listings for times), or simply pick up festival information – including a precious clue to finding the treasure in the first ever Rat Trap Treasure Hunt!

The residency programme at 1a will continue to offer artists the physical space to develop new work, as well as providing visitors with opportunities to engage in and share creative activities, from ink making to sound recording to tie-dying, screen printing and basket weaving. Most recently we have installed a community darkroom, which is ready for use upstairs.

Until March 2019, and hopefully for longer, you are invited to take part at 1a, and madeinroath will continue to seek out new ways for us to work with the place – and people – that we love.
