Gafnu Cymuned: Hollowed Community

Emma Cownie Sun 15 Oct, 3pm – 6pm, Mon 16 – Sun 22 Oct, 12pm – 5pm Inkspot, The Old Church, Newport Rd, CF24 1PU Disability Access: No Family Friendly: Yes This exhibition is inspired by my own community of Brynmill, in Swansea, which has been hollowed out by the proliferation of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs). These streetscapes focus on the summer months each year, when most of the students are absent, leaving this strange transient silence and sudden emptiness. There is an ominous aspect to each of these images and the intruding shadows hint at the transience of this peace. The shadows of pitched roofs of houses, chimneys and lamp posts, evoke memories of sun dials, one of the most ancient methods of marking time. Equally they too mark the absence of families and a balanced community. So, there is an underlying sadness here too. Emma Cownie is a Swansea based contemporary artist.
