Our Spoken Word programme is back with exciting opportunities for writers and literary lovers alike! This year we are asking you to listen and speak. Throughout the week you can listen to travel writing, accounts of refugees and asylum seekers as well as some traditional storytelling. The Spoken Word programme will close with a festival favourite – Octopoet – hosted by the talented Mark Blayney. Please join us for these wonderful and wordy events!

Five writers read their short stories. A warm, informal evening that focusses on how we write our (sometimes difficult) ‘truths’ into stories. Enhanced by evocative flute improvisations. The writing is diverse: humorous, sensitive, sometimes raw.Readings followed by a short, open discussion.
Amanda Rackstraw teaches writing courses for Cardiff University Continuing and Professional Education. She is also a storyteller and spoken word performer. RackstrawA@cf.ac.uk

2.30pm – 4.30pm
Why do we write, what do we write, how we write, and where do our ideas come from? Some of the questions we will attempt to answer in this informal two hour session. We will consider free writing as a way to unlock our thoughts, journal keeping as a probable source of originality, ideas and experimentation, and look at clustering, a useful technique that can help us organise our thoughts.
The group will discuss the elements of the short story such as character, conflict and plot, and all participants are invited to bring work they are happy to share. Beginners and more advanced writers are welcome.
