Sat 29 – Sun 30 April
For the fourth year, Made in Spring is kicking off with the Red Route march.
Red Route is a very special 27 mile march, demonstrating the importance of art and culture to society, from Merthyr Tydfil’s beautiful Redhouse to Made in Spring festival, Roath. Over two days we’ll walk along the Taff Trail, sharing food, conversation, and especially art – with a number of commissioned artworks and performances along the way.
This year’s Red Route artists include Nia Metcalfe, Kate Mercer, Cara Cullen, Dai Howell and Erin Rickard. We’re also delighted to be have contributions from Eleanor Davis, Wesley Matsell, Barracwda and South Wales Miners’ Library.
For information on times and locations join the Red Route Facebook event.
We’ll be posting regular updates of the Red Route march on social media so you can join en route if you want to do a portion of the walk.

Out of Place: art installation
Jess is an Urban Designer and Town Planner and is currently finishing a Masters by Research examining the role of art in fostering well-being and regeneration within communities in the UK. The research supports the work of madeinroath and the role art based practice can have in helping to build stronger relationships by improving our connection to an area and its physical environment.
What will I be doing at Made in Spring?
Following on from the madeinroath open air exhibition in Waterloo Gardens last October that visualised people’s memories of the nearby parks, Out of Place takes this material and places it in the trees on Plasnewydd Road. The community are invited to join in and donate or attach their own objects to the trees to celebrate our streets and outdoor spaces, and our connections to them.

Make a camera obscura creature or your own pinhole camera and watch the world upside down
Who are we?
AYTACRAYTA is the spell which brings the magic of camera obscura to life. It focuses mainly on the pinhole photography and making pinhole cameras. Camera obscura (‘dark chamber’) also known as a pinhole camera is an optical imaging device with a small hole made on one side of the box. The light which travels through the hole creates the picture on the opposite side inside of the box. The picture is upside down and sides are inverted. The 30th of April is also celebrated as the International day of pinhole photography. It is a good chance to start with making the pinhole cameras.
What will we be doing at Made in Spring?
Did you know you can make a camera obscura from almost any rubbish and watch the reality upside down? During the workshop, the kids will have an opportunity to make a camera obscura creatures from the cardboard boxes. They can decorate them from outside according to their fantasy, making the garden creatures which sees the world differently. By learning about the principle of the pinhole photography, they will watch the clouds on the ground and people walking near the sky. No chemicals nor photographic papers will be used, simply with the tracing paper inserted inside the camera and the black curtain covering the camera from outside, we will achieve the magic. If you are an adult and want to experiment with pinhole photography further or you are a skilled child you can bring any coffee tin, cardboard tin, coke can or box and make a camera with a photographic paper to experiment at home.
No special skills are necessary for making the pinhole camera, only your will and enthusiasm, patience and a bit of time.
What time will we be there?
11am – 4pm

Cardiff YMCA Housing Association is a charitable Housing Association and a Registered Social Landlord. We are registered with the Welsh Government and we directly manage board and lodge hostels in the Roath area of Cardiff.
At our hostels, we provide temporary accommodation for homeless people of both sexes, all ages and various backgrounds. We also provide support to our residents in their search for permanent accommodation as well as support for a range of other identified needs.
All of our work with young people and vulnerable adults is based on providing sound, clear and professional advice. All of our staff are trained to a high standard to deliver up to date and relevant advice and support to the people we support.
The Design for Life scheme, is part of the YMCA, was developed to enable residents to enhance their basic and general skills through a programme of accredited and non-accredited training, activities, information and advice, in order to improve employability and sustain self-sufficiency once residents move on into alternative accommodation.
What have we done for Made in Spring?
Design For Life is taking part in Made in Spring to help YMCA residents feel part of the community, build confidence and overcome anxiety in a difficult time. Residents from the YMCA collaborated with madeinroath to create the mural. The mural is of a picture taken in Roath Park, inspired by the paintings of David Hockney. The mural will be on display at Made in Spring.
Special Thank You to Plas Newydd Centre for letting us use the court yard to paint the mural.

Flat porfRomance
Jason Cook is currently undertaking his second year of study within Cardiff School of Art and Design. Presently he is conducting an enquiry into the painter’s arsenal of materials. He is interested in work that lends itself to the context and aestheticism of minimalism and supporting movements. His work is created in conversation with subjects of mortality, materiality, class, and process. Currently looking for a place to situate himself within our post- art world.
What will I be doing at Made in Spring?
Jason’s current showing: ‘Flat porfRomance’ isolates him inside the simple abstract. The performance is open for interpretation, although it draws out themes found in the observation from the people within the working classes. He thinks of these people as the true idols in the world. With as much respect as possible from the artist, his performance elevates qualities like ambition, joy and passion that can be found within the repetition and the mundane. The artist finds these qualities in his production methods found within his past paintings where the concept is weighted over the physical manifestation.
