As ever, the open houses are an exciting part of the madeinroath festival. Do take some time out to discover the creativity hiding behind your neighbours’ doors. It’s a great way to meet, socialise and experience the wealth of art made in Roath. It could be anything, from tapestry to ceramics to sound art to offering company and a cup of tea.

Contemporary photography. A collection of images illustrating the textures, colours and experience of living in locations in Wales and beyond.
Individually, the images explore people’s relationship with the place they call home. Collectively, they reflect the range and complexity of those experiences: whether we have simply come to rest in a particular place, or have to exploit every aspect of that place to create a livelihood and survive.

Gabrielle Jessica Frazer:
Gabrielle produces individual sculptural ceramic pieces which explore her intrigue of life, nature, and ceramic process. She hand builds her piece, bisque fires them then uses a smoke firing technique; no glazes or pigments are used, all the colours are produced in the firing. It is not until the magic moment of the kiln opening that the result is seen. Gabrielle then burnishes and waxes the sculptures to produce a rich lustrous finish.
Dorcas Pennyfather:
Dorcas is a bricolager which means she uses whatever comes to hand to make her art. One reason is to comment on the unnecessary consumerism which abounds today but also to reflect her interest in her past. Her fascination with the knowledge that she is a product of many ancestors has led her to explore the occupations of her forefathers and their lifestyles, especially the women. Through her work she invites others to wonder about their own past.
