Happenings and interventions take place all over the neighbourhood in a variety of sites, including empty shops, overlooked public spaces, peoples’ front gardens, homes and independent businesses. The Happenings category includes many of our newly commissioned projects which invite artists, both local and from all over the UK, to make new work in response to a specific site or element of life in Roath.

The Valley Project is an ongoing series documenting thriving communities in South Wales Valleys. Villages in the valleys have been named the most poverty stricken places in the UK and with up to 50% of it’s young residents unemployed. This has been an issue since the pit closures and continues to offer few opportunities for the generations who came after the industrial boom. These photos show how members of the community are fighting back this stigma and individuals who are proud of their environment. Abercynon is a prime example of this, this small village in the Rhondda Cynon Taff has a strong community which has continuous efforts to provide opportunities with various approaches from it’s popular library to their well loved all male choir. The subjects within my photos are from relationships, not by passers, my ultimate rule when approaching this sensitive situation is to gain the trust of my sitter.

Echoing the visits to the ancient ruins of Athens in the Eighteenth Century by the elite on their ‘Grand Tour’, Fragments For A City In Ruins imagines a visitor from the future, wandering through the city, its ruins, both ancient and modern.
Post-apocalyptic and elegiac, poetic and political, Rees’ film responds to the geopolitical context of Athens, in relation to the seismic events of the continuing global financial and refugee crises. Ruins, as “unstable sites of temporal fluctuation in which past, present and future coexist”, provide a trope through which notions of history and empire can be excavated in relation to spatial politics. Thus, the work invites reflection on the construction of historical narrative with regard to contemporary discourses of power and, through its exploration of the city of Athens, the entwined histories of democracy and financialization, debt and dispossession, empire and ruins.

Ensemble, puts together its first collaborative project, this sister group of Rusty Squid, crosses the boundaries of art, design and engineering. Creating a new winged form in the world of robotics and art.
An upturned mechanical moth, responsive to the actions of its handler, it plays with both our instinctual empathy with the vulnerable and our internal intrigue in insects. This basketball size creature invites its viewer to pick it up, pass it around. The moth’s interaction increases through this handling and its wings will gradually unfold.
Combining the aesthetic beauty of paper folding, printing and casting, with robotics to create this digitally refined piece. Working with the internal need to protect and aid vulnerable beings, and Inspired by the true form of moths, this vulnerability affects how it is handled. Exposed mechanisms and paper wings accentuate this idea and bring the world of robotics on display in an open, tangible and accessible form.

An image is burnt to the retina. A flash of something that lingers in my memory. It is playful, holds beauty, holds power. I will not forget it.
Chocolate guns melt into fondue and singing, speaking mouths burst with glitter, fruit, watercolour and jelly. Things are revealed upon our bodies, words spoken to stillness and everyone will dance.
Sex Change Disco is a surreal and uncanny multi-media statement on safe space, equality and allowing openness to the individual.

Originally from Trinidad, I have been resident in Wales since 2003. My current preoccupation is the Trinidad Carnival experimenting with different ways of engaging manifestations of this performance in diverse spaces. Of particular interest to me is the idea of masking to reveal alternative often subdued aspects of ‘self’ and the idea of wearing or performing stories of personal, social, political relevance in public spaces.
‘Presence’ develops a drawing performance that utilizes public outdoor spaces to insert re-presentations of aspects of self. Here I consider questions around visibility/invisibility, belonging and un-belonging and the significance of a post Brexit protest in a space that appears already disenfranchised and at times irritated by immigrant presences.
This work is interested in public ‘in-between’ places exploring both the drawing/painting of self-representations and the very public performance of doing the act of drawing/painting.

Flags of Roath is a new project by artist James Cocks. Through a series of printed flags, which explore the rich cultural, social and historical identities of Roath, James will be hosting a celebratory procession through the streets of Roath to introduce these images to the community, highlighting all that is positive about Roath. The procession will feature performers, Welcome House artists, musicians and James Greens’ masks.
The flags will be on display at Made in Roath’s studios at Welcome House at the beginning of the day on Saturday 15th. From Welcome House, the procession will work its way to the Global Home event on Plasnewydd Rd to join the Puppet Parade before travelling on to 28 The Parade. On Sunday, the flags will be exhibited at Welcome House.
This project draws upon James’ involvement in the Red Route marches of Made in Spring ‘15 & ‘16 and the Cardiff without Culture protest earlier in the year.

Music of the Spheres uses mathematics, and attempts to demonstrate that everything, including the Earth and planets, produce a resonant pitch. Gareth Ziggy is an artist primarily working with sound.
The piece consists of an interactive spinning globe that emits frequencies and will light up in specific locations depending on sounds made by the viewer. In harmony with the piece the viewer becomes part of the celestial symphony that is ever present but normally inaudible to the human ear. The artist also links the use of sound by humans throughout the ages to produce certain effects, such as healing the body and building the Great Pyramid of Giza through to torture methods used by the American military and shopkeepers playing specific tones to drive teenagers away from hanging around outside their premises.

11am – 2pm, 15 minute workshops throughout the day
Wish upon a crane at this informal drop in session and it may come true!
Mixed media artist Karen O’Shea will teach you how to fold the most classic of Japanese origami, the crane, a symbol of long-life with the ability to grant wishes. Add your wish and display it in your home or garden. A link to crane folding instructions are provided on Karen’s facebook page so that you can start making ahead of the festival (facebook.com/karenosheaart) and to enable you to make more afterwards at home. Tweet photos of your beautiful colourful cranes and wishes to the festival social media @madeinroath2016 and to @karenosheaart #cranespotting
Karen is an award winning mixed media artist running creative workshops for all ages and abilities, specialising in wellbeing. For more information visit @karenosheaart on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest & Twitter.
