An exhibition of original postcard artwork created for this years Postcard Project with artist James Cocks and madeinroath’s CREATE co-ordinator Pip Tudor.
Looking at Roath as a physical space and as a wider community of people, lead artist James Cocks ran three workshops inviting people to unpick their own ideas of Roath through a series of writing tasks and an exploration of the area. We often do not take the time to really reflect on where we live so during the workshops people were encouraged to walk around Roath looking, thinking, exploring, writing and from this participants made word collages and developed their postcard designs.
The original postcard artwork will be on display alongside printed postcards for you to take away and send to friends, family, loved ones, strangers to show them our written pictures of Roath.

I have spent the last year drawing portraits at Rhydypennau Library, where I have heard many lovely stories. This is where this work began.
It is Christmas time, possibly Boxing Day, 1946 or 1947. The Pride of Roath Park boat is taken out on the lake, decorated to look like a swan and carrying a fleet of swan ballerinas, tutus and all. Hazel was 12 and one of the young ballerinas who attended the local ballet school just opposite the lake, she has long been hoping to find a photo of this event.
These paintings are inspired by Hazel’s story and quest to find a photograph. They are part memory and a partly imagined re-telling of this tale.
All ages welcome.

An exhibition of photographs and poetry inspired by the doors and windows of Roath, exploring the complexities of living in a shared urban environment, asking questions such as: How do we connect with those around us? What prevents us from crossing the threshold to a new place? And how do we respond to new challenges and opportunities?
Rachel Carney is a poet, blogger and photographer with a keen interest in ekphrastic writing. This project forms part of her ongoing research into the interaction between visual art and poetry. She is currently completing an MA in Creative Writing, and has had poems published in various journals including Ink Sweat and Tears, The Open Mouse, The High Window, The Wales Haiku Journal and Sarasvati Magazine.

Two years ago ‘Gorau Chwarae, cyd-chwarae’ reverberated around Cardiff, Wales and the World as the proverb spurred the Welsh football team to greatness. This project seeks to explore Welsh proverbs, representing as they do community wisdom developed over centuries. The proverbs selected here highlight inclusivity, optimism and hope. This project places a selection of proverbs back into the community through letterform. This is a development from an exhibition in Oriel Blodau Bach.

Event Details
Emma Hutchinson is a classically trained fine artist with a BA(Hons) in Painting from CSAD at Cardiff Metropolitan University, who has gone on to launch a business providing bespoke modern portraiture internationally.
The focus of Emma’s project will be Llanedeyrn’s only shopping centre, the Maelfa, which is undergoing exciting redevelopment taking the form of new shops, a library, health centre and affordable housing. The aim of this project is to create an historical snapshot of the people who work and live in the area, to preserve a way of life before and during this phase of redevelopment.
The parallel lines of the brutalist architecture has given the Maelfa a tired reputation, becoming outdated as the area has grown. The new development provides an opportunity for existing businesses and new services to replenish the area. This project looks at the lives of those who will be affected positively by those changes and to examine the personal impact of the renovation.

Alix Edwards is a writer, photographer and artist whose work explores the themes of marginalisation, domestic violence, motherhood and resilience. She facilitates workshops, undertakes commissions in photography and painting and runs her own open Mic and Guest event Company of Words in Cardiff City Centre.
Her work focuses on bringing statistics to life and these vibrant paintings, called Foetus Flowers, inspired by Helen Chadwick’s Piss Flowers, tell the story of those women who, unmarried and pregnant in the 18th to late 20th Century were forced to give up their babies and put to work washing sheets in prison-like conditions in ‘institutions known as Magdalene laundries.
Current projects by this artist include instagram series 104 Locks which mourns the 2 women killed every week by domestic violence in England and Wales, Outside-In a photographic series which questions women and relationships in the 21st Century and novel about the maid versus the mafia entitled Nada.

Wicked Women’s Institute is founded by Emina Redzepovic, it’s a project for the empowerment of women, a podcast featuring real and honest conversations, craft, workshops and lots more. Being a wicked women is about self love, smashing the patriarchy, not accepting sexism and being proud of who you are.
Self love surgery is about focusing on the positive, we’re constantly subjected to images of ‘ideals’ and ‘perfection’ so we buy creams, clothes and lotions that help us achieve it but do we ever stop and see ourselves as we are? Accepting of the imperfections, being nice to ourselves and feeling ok with who we are.
Colour in some affirmations, write some, take some, scale your self love and have a look in the mirror and listen to some positive, life affirming words all with tea, coffee and biscuits – yum.

‘space, hope + altered estates’ continues Stitt’s personal exploration into brutalist architecture and the physical experience of day-to-day living amongst the ‘new future’ of post world war society. Bold + abstract, Stitt’s paintings suggest the function of art + architecture as a futuristic vision of social development. We encounter overlapping architectural blueprints, strange non-objects + floating geometric shapes; certain motifs hark to the mid-century modern, yet simultaneously hint at the digital + the coded. This is Stitt’s imagined + constructed retro-future – hard, angular + flat.

My artwork explores nature and the theme of protection.
My work is both decorative and scientific, yet full of meaning which is intertwined with my own experiences. I am intrigued by museum collections and the process of ordering and storing specimens and motivated by my knowledge of how to care for, repair and prevent the decay of objects over time. These interests influence my choice of materials and the way in which I catalogue and display my work. My fragile plants are created from beeswax that lasts for hundreds of years and my delicate bees’ wings are etched from solid sheets of copper which oxidises to form its own protective surface. My works are named and numbered in sequences and housed in trays, boxes and domes to keep them in order and safe from harm.
Through my artwork I aim to combine fragility and strength in a unique manner, to create beauty and inspiration that will encourage others to observe and protect the natural world around them.

Sarah Boulton is an artist based in Wales. She graduated from Slade School of Art and works in between performance, writing, detailed events and ephemeral installations.
Doves is a piece that I first tested in 2014 at the Slade with friends but we never documented it. A gathering of dove soap segments will be in place for viewers to take from, to keep or use. The works exist best in the fantasy of the imagination but also in the daily run of life. Washing your hands with dove soaps means that the work is simultaneously happening and dissolving. The artwork is the fact that there is a chance that the smell of dove soap can live in the air across multiple places over a slightly stretched period of time.
The artwork is suitable for an audience of all ages and will be lovely for a child who is first learning to wash their hands. The soap can be kept as a relic if unused, or discarded, just as the viewer intends.

This is the last year Jane will be exhibiting at madeinroath. Jane set up her studio six years ago, and will be closing in October in order to work more from home.
She specialises in making individual textile items such as handspun, handwoven or knitted scarves, cushions, rugs etc., and also working with natural dyes on silk scarves.
There will also be a small number of items by other weavers and love spoons by a local wood turner. Because she is closing the studio soon, Jane needs to reduce her stock, so start your Christmas shopping early!

It is the root capacity of symbolism to spark connections in the mind and convey meaning. In this workshop participants will explore their responses to symbolism and the associations they make.
Through writing and discussion we will examine the landscape of the psyche and the connections sparked in response to the images.
The intention is to create a relaxed environment and it will be the individual’s choice whether or not to partake in group discussion. Some will prefer just to write about the associations they see.

A creative writing workshop based on the work of Charles Byrd (1916-2018) whose paintings depict Cardiff in the 1950s, capturing the city at an important time in history; emerging from the second world war, energised by new technologies, materials, music, culture and leisure. His paintings tell a story of Cardiff, full of colour and vibrant with life.
Come along and view these fascinating paintings of a much-changed and disappearing cityscape, share stories, explore the history of Cardiff and write a short story prompted by one of the paintings.
Stories may be published on the Artist Trails website and included in the Charles Byrd Story Trail.
The workshop will be led by two local artists…

Faye Scott Farrington is a Manchester based artist who works with textiles, digital media and collage. Her work is often comic and obscene. For her show ‘Tough Tits’ at The Diana Rooms, Faye has worked with cheap weekly women’s magazines and hardcore pornography to develop a body of work exploring voyeurism and emotional and sexual exploitation.
The Diana Rooms is a creative space in a domestic home, offering selected artists the opportunity to develop work in residencies at a leisurely pace with the view to an exhibition in our gallery space. Exhibitions and residencies are accompanied by cross-disciplinary collaborations and responses, including writing and performance. Our shows are viewable by appointment, during our publicised events and for MiR2018 we are opening our doors to the public for the second half of the festival.

As a recent Fine Art graduate I have found myself looking at the domestic and recently focused on the mundane and often overlooked clothes peg. Fascinating imagery around the peg such as holding on and fighting with nature and washday metaphors such as don’t air your dirty washing in public which in these times have direct correlation’s to the use of the mobile phone, have led me this fun way of exploring the domestic and hopefully discovering even more interesting and revealing metaphors and ideas for future work.
Sock it to me is a request for your lonely socks (we all have them lingering in the bottoms of our drawers) and to hang them in a celebration, a salute to the individual and revelation of what we as a community wear on our feet! This is an event that the whole family can enjoy dig out your socks and a peg or two and join me in this celebration of the unsung hero – the sock….. Tell me about them, write a poem, a story, draw them, …… we will just have fun

I often work with memories and nostalgia, my child hood was structured around my Grandma’s Bingo addiction (or battle with depression). Here, in revisiting my past alongside madeinroath. I have created the feel of a Social Club ‘Bingo Hall’, in the space fitting of the classic game. The authenticity of fixtures and fittings, interplayed with my spoken word pieces add a contemporary element of performance to bring the old fashioned British institution of Bingo and poetry together against the backdrop of the traditional pubs of Roath.

An exhibition of my oil paintings, mostly flowers and still life with some local scenes and figures. The venue is my home studio, a light airy space that was originally an Edwardian shop. Along with framed paintings there will be a selection of unframed works, prints and greetings cards for sale. I mostly paint from life. Light and colour are very important and artistic influences include Bonnard, William Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson. Come along and have a chat. If you’d like to visit outside these times, please email. Looking forward to meeting you.

We are developing an African film club, an informal community of people interested in watching, exploring and getting involved in African film. The club which is part of Watch-Africa will use under served locations for screenings, especially BAME communities. Films related to Africa and those made by African filmmakers hardly reach everyone, we want to expand the reach of African films beyond independent cinemas. This screening kickstarts the club in Cardiff, to see and discuss the role of art in political activism, in this context looking at Burkina Faso and how art has shaped the political landscape of the country. We will be joined by artist and filmmakers from Burkina Faso and Gavin Porter for Q&A.

Hi there! I’m an an illustrator from Cardiff. I love to draw.
‘What Roath Means To Me’ is a series of prints exploring the highlights of Roath in a fun and quirky way, I’ve lived in Cardiff all my life and always loved visiting the terrapins in the Roath Park Conservatory, or running the gauntlet that is Death Junction! These prints are fun for the whole family, and if you like my illustrations make sure to take lots of photos and share with me on Instagram – @garethbrownillustration.

How social is social media?
I am currently a Fine Art Masters student at Cardiff Metropolitan University, who is interested in the internet and social media. My work focuses on information that is passed from screen to screen, and the emotional impact this can have on internet users.
My video piece is suitable for all ages, although it is mostly aimed at teenagers and young people that have grown up while surrounded by technology and the internet.

We are a mother (Kathryn) and daughter (Maeve), 5th and 4th generation Roath locals respectively. Our family, from parents with babies in prams to the very elderly, have always enjoyed park wandering. Our installation is a memorial to what’s been lost and the damage to the environment and the community. But it’s also an opportunity to reframe – and celebrate the trees and the beautiful parks.
Lead artist Maeve is a sculptor who has recently been working mainly with ice. Kathryn works with mixed media. We had been working independently on tree-centric pieces when this idea began.
(Ice melts! – and the work will change a little over the period of the festival)

You are warmly invited to this years Open exhibition. The Open has been a feature of Made in Roath since the first festival in 2009. Now ten years on we are delighted to be holding this years Open in g39.
One of our most popular and eagerly awaited events, we have once again been overwhelmed by the standard of the submissions we have recieved. Unlike many other Open exhibitions, the madeinroath Open is free to enter, and again this year, the winner will be chosen by public vote.
Come along and celebrate the beginning of this years madeinroath festival at this very special event.
The image used here is entitled Early Bird, a print by our very first people’s choice winner in 2009, Jerry Hoare.
If you’d like to submit your work please contact Dai on media@madeinroath.com before Monday 8th of October.

My artist journey started after 2011 when I almost lost the fight . Life happened and a violent aneurysm hit my brain. I was paralysed in a wheelchair and in nappies for 5 months and decided not for me. So painted my way.. to where I am today. Finished my MA in art health and wellbeing after 3 years in Dramarthen (Carmarthen) BA-fine art.

We are interested in engaging with the spectrum of homelessness within Cardiff City to hear personal stories. I am interested in the relationship between the material and immaterial and its bearing upon us.
I am currently researching and producing lens based work that uses archetypal symbolism: Exploring the idea that meaning has become embedded in our perception of certain objects and their images. The proposition being that structures of the images will vary from culture to culture and person to person but are not limitless or chaotic; they are archaic and shared by all people.
The meaning of these symbolic images may not always be obvious, they may appear surreal; however our psyche interprets their intention (albeit objectively or subjectively); it is the root capacity of symbolism to spark connections in the mind and convey meaning.
Each piece is like a jigsaw mystery, whose parts must be understood to fully grasp their relevance as a whole. It is my intention that they become richer through this approach; ‘The whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts.’
Additional Workshop with lens based media artist Rory Buckland
Join a workshop at 1A Inverness Place, on Tue 16 from 6:30pm.
Symbolic Imagery: Exploring the mind through writing and discussion about imagery.

Mandy Lane
Details of location can be found out from 1a Inverness Place.
My practice explores the inter-relationships between the female gender and the world; examining female-ness and femininity as subjected by the male gaze in both a wider-world context, and within the domestic sphere.
This lens hopes to expose the cultural conditioning and socially ingrained objectification of females from birth, inside and out of a family unit.
My work is multidisciplinary with a strong sense of narrative. My practice attempts to expose ‘her-story’ over-ruling the past and present cultural guidelines of what was important and upheld.

Garmon is a film and digital photographer from Cardiff and this is his first time displaying work publicly. In his images he communicates a strong sense of place. Having grown up in an urban environment, agricultural rural Wales is a landscape he had not previously explored through photography, despite a great affinity for North Wales and its expansive landscape. Its infinite presence can be menacing, and he enjoys the challenge of containing it in a single image, using strong lines and composition to communicate that the landscape or subject extends beyond the frame. The series is suitable for all ages.

Rhôd is an artist-run project based in rural west Wales. The enduring theme of Rhôd’s activity is the artistic dialogue between rural and urban environments and the ways in which artists can help to think about and interpret those differences and similarities. A drop-in workshop which is easy and fun, suitable for both adults and children, though little ones may need some help from their parents. A simple design is drawn on pre-painted rectangles of strong cardboard, or you can use the stencils provided. Glue is applied to one area at a time, followed by the coloured rice, and the picture which emerges is both textured and vibrant.
I am an artist working mainly in drawing and painting, based in the Mindfulness and Wellbeing Centre, Cardiff. I. have facilitated a number of workshops with both adults and children at community events. including previous mir festivals. I feel that we can all be creative and my motivation for offering this workshop is simply to see people enjoying themselves through engaging in a creative activity.

During World War 1 the pupils from Albany School moved to other local schools and the school became a Military Hospital. The children in year 5 & 6 have been busy researching and will take visitors on a journey showing what was happening in the building 100 years ago. Each year our exhibition gets bigger and better and we find out more about soldiers who were treated in the hospital during this period. There will be WW1 music, photos from the time, a hospital ward, tours and much more. Tea, coffee and refreshments will also be available.

I am an artist who is passionate about connecting people through art whilst documenting their experiences. Aaron’s Space is an interactive installation that explores the unique perspective of a 5 year-old child with Autism. The installation exhibits Aaron’s knowledge of shapes and colour as well as his interest of numbers and letters.
Offering an accessible and safe space, as well as a place of calm for everyone in the city, the installation is fully interactive, offering participants the opportunity to develop the installation by producing new sensory bottles and painting through bubbles. To fully embrace the interactive theme of the installation, participants are invited to take a piece of the exhibition home with them on the last day.

Gallery spaces are often expansive empty rooms and buildings, intimidating in their formality. This apprehensive atmosphere often prevents us from fully enjoying artworks. We seek to subvert the traditional gallery experience, and the obvious response is of course, a van. ‘Vantage Point’ takes the humble van and seeks to make it more than just a means of getting from A to B, but, instead, a venue for showcasing contemporary art. Parked along the bottom of Bangor Street on the 20th and 21st, we’ll be showing an exciting hotpot of sculpture, textiles, and sonic art. Come and experience art from a new vantage point.

Johana Hartwig’s work looks at the construction and evolution of spaces, with a focus on cross-collaboration with other disciplines and a historical – geographical perspective. Johana’s work stimulates thinking around value and disposability and often considers the way that we impact upon our immediate environment.
This new work responds to Roath Brook and its surrounding banks, it considers town planning and the accessibility / politics of the adjacent public / private land. The work is part of a larger ongoing project around Cardiff’s waterways and looks at some of Roath’s street names such as ‘Nant Wedal’, which may reference the bloody battle of the1600’s up on the ‘Great Heath’, that turned the brook ‘blood red’, through to the recent controversial tree removal in Waterloo Gardens and further to where the water is squashed between commercial units on lower Colchester Avenue.

Glenn Carney’s new work is based on out-of-season West Wales. The work is memory based and uses bold colour as direct expression of emotion. Inspiration is drawn from remote places, while considering the human imprint. Many of the paintings are on copper sheet, sometimes also using gold leaf. Exhibiting widely during the last 10 years, Glenn and Den welcome this opportunity to meet art enthusiasts.

Cam Elizabeth, Mike Erskine
This project explores what happens when you make time to share your thinking with ears that are keen to listen. Often life is so busy that we don’t have a chance to focus on ourselves and even less often do we have an opportunity to experience the good attention of others. We keep you company while you think about anything and everything that is getting stuck in your mind.
We are a local community researcher and filmmaker with a shared belief that humans are complex beings with rich stories to tell and that all voices matter.
We will be posing questions that facilitate discussion in a safe and non-judgemental space. With this being our local festival, we’re keen to explore the following question:
When do you feel most connected to other people and what gets in the way of you connecting to your local community?
There’ll also be a Listening Post where you can hear audio recordings of others who have shared their thinking.
All very welcome.

We are a small group of ceramic artists based at BaseArt Studio and gallery, where we gather to create and share our experiences of working with clay.
Nature is our common inspiration, from microscopic to naive, the transparency of foliage to the geometry of the landscape.
Claire Spencer-Jones creates vessels of unorthodox shapes and carves images of nature onto their surfaces.
Susan Zeppellini explores nature under the microscope lens producing contemporary sculptures.
Amanda Whiting’s work is a journey through naivety where she envisions a world without seriousness and with much joy and humour.
Joanna Israel’s work is precise and meticulous where the preparation and execution are very important and when put together the formation is magical.
All welcome to come and view our creations!

When I was a Tree is an experimental ritual storytelling journey. From Roath Recreation Ground, a story of creation and relationship with mother earth, through Roath Pleasure Gardens with a pleasure feast of birth of nature, to Roath Park Lake, with a reunion experience. This journey includes participatory experimentation.
This performance contains narrative storytelling, solo contemporary dance, and subtle guided movements.
Let the Earth pull you in.

Picasso said, ‘To draw you must close your eyes and sing.’ In this workshop, visitors will be invited to follow Picasso’s advice and paint a tile with their eyes closed while humming or singing their favourite song. This is a great way to overcome the inhibitions of conscious control such as ‘I can’t draw’, or ‘I don’t know what to draw,’ and was used by artists such as The Surrealists to access the unconscious/imagination. Each tile will form part of a collaborative artwork – a path of abstract mark making – that will fill the space, and extend outside. Participants will be able to collect their artwork at the end of the festival.

Come propose a public sculpture to be situated in Roath, always wanted to see something interesting situated in your neighbourhood? Join us and draw it. No idea too abstract or large scale ignored.
The project will look at collaborative town planning and how we shape the space around us, encouraging the public to engage with their community and the place they live. The proposals could range from the history of the space to something completely irrelevant, they could range from the personal to the private and anything that the public associate with Roath.
Alongside this we start a new hashtag for social media platforms where you can describe your own imagined public sculpture with a photograph of where it would be placed. #publicartRoath
Amy and Rory’s collaborative practice uses tropes from popular culture to appropriate contemporary life and examine notions of fact and fiction in an internet dominated society.

I am a self taught artist obsessed with the movies. I love painting in acrylic and have developed my own style over the last few years. My favourite subject is anything to do with pop-culture, movie stars, pop stars and tv series. I specialise in portraits, capturing the ‘mood’ of the film/tv or comic series. My artwork has been sold all over the world and at shows such as comic cons and Christmas markets here in Wales.
My home is open for you to explore my artwork, learn how I became an artist here in Cardiff and where you can purchase my work. My inspiration is all around my home and my work is perfect for that geek you know who has everything else.
Please feel free to bring along the children to learn how to paint/draw their favourite superhero or character. I will have a demonstration and a quick class for anybody who wants to learn.

I was born in Patras, Greece in 1984. I am now a visual artist and PhD student based in Swansea, Wales.
Throughout my career as an artist I have worked somewhere between the disciplines of performance, theatre and installation art and education.
My main interest at the moment is in creating site specific installations where the viewer has the chance to experience situations or listen to dialogues from other people’s lives in a homey enviroment. They vary from performative to new media installations but always utilise script and speech.
Parlour is a self-referential site specific installation where the viewer will have the chance to overhear the creative process of how Parlour was created.
All ages are welcome to join the Parlour at 32 Kelvin Road!

Kathryn Campbell Dodd is a visual artist based in west Wales, she has a particular interest in museum objects and heritage venues and uses a variety of media to make her work. Installed in a homein Roath, the ‘Every ornament should have its perfume’ series is a richly patterned and colourful installation incorporating painting and textiles. Influenced by the designs of William Morris and other Arts and Crafts designers and craftspeople, the work both celebrates and casts a questioning eye on the aesthetic, political and philosophical legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement and its contemporary relevance.

Sandra Gustafsson is a Cardiff-based designer who graduated from an MA in Design for Performance at RWCMD in 2017. Sandra enjoys exploring themes that challenge and inspire audiences whilst making her projects come alive using technical realisation skills. She is particularly intrigued by transforming non-conventional performance spaces into sites of action, creating the unexpected and weaving it through the everyday lives of the audience.
‘Dreamers’ Shed’ is an installation that invites the audience into a re-imagined space inspired by the beautiful and surreal aspects of some of Dylan Thomas’ work. The concept is centred around creating a contained, dream-like space inside a residential home in Cardiff, which invites the city-dwellers of Roath to pop into this small installation as a way of momentary escapism. As the space is a visual representation of poetic work, it also encourages visitors to take a moment to perhaps read a poem during this visit, or even write one themselves!

Sometimes it’s possible to drown in the responsibilities of everyday life and forget who you are. Creating a vision board is a chance to focus on you and what you want, in a fun supportive environment.
Use the images and art materials provided or bring your own.Work alone or in group. Use words, pictures or both. The map is the territory and the choices are yours but at the end of this activity you will have your very own vision board to take home to remind you of your dreams which you can then turn into realities!

‘Lifted’ is a interactive durational installation that invites participants to reflect on ‘what it takes to lift a stranger’. Somewhere in the city a 6ft3 pigeon has been grounded and unable to fly. Participants contribute statements, suggestions and sentiments shared in an installation of mounting balloons attached to the pigeon’s body. The piece invites conversation, frustration and wishful thinking as passersby of all ages look down and then up to the anticipated flight; could it take just one more balloon?

Page to Stage Wales
Following on from our successful ‘kindness’ workshops, at madeinroath 2017, Page to Stage Wales are back with an exciting all day workshop allowing participants, with or without acting experience, to warm up, play games, learn new exercises and collaborate to devise a short piece of theatre to be shown on the day to family and friends.
Page to Stage Wales is a drama in education company run by Sarah Bawler and Serena Lewis, two actresses, teachers, directors and crafters who have a passion for social history. We use photographs, music, artefacts and people’s stories to create theatre.
In this day long workshop for 18+, we’ll give you time to feel comfortable in the space, facilitate a range of games and exercises to warm brains and bodies, tell stories then devise a short piece of theatre based on ‘community’, drawing on the stories of Roath’s history. We’d love it if you have any stories or photos linked to community but please don’t worry if you haven’t.
Booking necessary.

Paintings and mixed media work by a survivor.

In the conservative world of Yemen where there are no luxuries of park or safe places amidst the suffering of war and siege, women have created a world of their own, where they forget their worries. It allows a breath toward adapting to everyday pressures, whether as a working woman, a mother or both. In this secret society women gather in homes relaxing with shisha, smoking cigarettes and sometimes using quat listening to music and discussing the life and politics around them.
Eman Al- Awami is a photographer living in Yemen. She works for international organizations to document humanitarian situations and public life. She attended a training workshop in Beirut, Lebanon taken by Cardiff photojournalist Glenn Edwards for the Thomson Foundation and British Council in 2018.

Try your hand at freestyle embroidery to stitch your creative mark on a recycled denim bunting.
On the day, just bring yourself and an idea of what you might like to say on your bunting flag. Experienced textile artist & tutor, Karen will show you some for inspiration and guide you in embroidery according to your ability and aspirations for you to create your own beautiful personalised flag to include in the festival display. Your flag can be returned to you afterwards if you would like to keep it.
Even before the day of the workshop, you can get started if you want to, in these ways:
1. Donate clean but tatty old jeans or scraps of pretty cotton/linen for the tutor to recycle – deliver to the madeinroath space at 1a Inverness Place or to the tutor by arrangement.
2. If you know how to sew/embroider and would like to get started on sewing a flag or two, please contact the tutor for the denim template, or to collect some denim flags. Please return these before 1 October so they can be included in the festival-long window display.

In celebration of Roath’s creative community, unique local businesses and 10 years of madeinroath, The Rat Trap Treasure Hunt will guide you on an alternative treasure hunt across 9 diverse locations.
Each location has been allocated to an artist or musician, and will house a site specific artwork or musical intervention containing a clue for the next location. The Treasure Hunt will finish with a Rat Trap party where the winning team will receive their prize.
Rat Trap is a multi-platform collective of visual artists and musicians. We organise and curate events in unrecognised venues around Cardiff, where we attempt to blur audiences and formats to unite the art, music and D.I.Y. scenes.
Max. 4 people per team (if you have a larger group we recommend splitting into two or more teams – nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition!) We will begin at 1a Inverness Place at 1pm.
All ages welcome, but please note certain locations may be more suited to older children.

BARCODE A short vacuum packed performance: taking a darkly humourous look at shopping, consumption, who we are now and who owns us. Have we been sleepwalking into a world where under the illusion of freedom we can no longer make the choices that we would really like to make.
There will be an opportunity to take part in an open discussion at the end of the piece. The performance is approx 10 mins and discussion approx 30mins.
For quite a few years now I have been a 2D artist and was a street artist when living in Leeds. I showed a collection of large charcoal drawings in last year’s madeinroath at the old Laundry Space. This year after working in the studio on these ideas for 6 months it became apparent that the work needed to come off of the 2D page and assume a 3D real life identity again, making real living connections with people. It would be great to see you there!

Event Details
The Baffling is a performance event that brings together artists and musicians to create a continuous soundtrack to a programme of live music, film, demos and readings. The event name has a double meaning; both the acoustic architecture to control sound, and a verb meaning to deflect, perplex or hoodwink. With artists Benjamin Owen, Giles Bailey and Kit Poulson; musicians Corey Mwamba and Matt Lovett; and interventions from Claire Vaughan and Chris Brown among others, The Baffling explores the ritual of soundtracking, the nature of collectivity and redrawn relationships between film, sound and performance.
The Baffling is part of Everything. All At Once. At The Same Time, a series of events and exhibitions that pick up on the multiple thought processes that keep us both doing and thinking, the gap between the physical world and the internal monologue of our lives. We exist balancing moments between the things we have to do and the things we want to do.

Put on your pyjamas and join Nanna Dragma in this ffabulous evening of queer re-tellings of Aesop’s Fables. The wonderful thing about Dragma is you never know what is up her sleeve (other than her tissues)! Inspired by the drawing room at Castell Coch, and after collecting brand-spanking new stories from the LGBT+ community, Fflamingo presents its debut production – Gaesop’s Fables – through storytelling, physical theatre, comedy and puppetry. This event is recommended 18+.
Fflamingo is a new cross-genre performance company specialising in creating, producing and supporting queer work made in Wales. Our mission is to develop and promote the queer voice in Wales by producing strong, exciting, and emotive performance that challenges and empowers audiences in Wales and beyond. Fflamingo not only develops and produces our own works, but seeks to form partnerships and working opportunities with similar Queer identifying artists.

Rhôd is an artist-run project based in rural west Wales. The enduring theme of Rhôd’s activity is the artistic dialogue between rural and urban environments and the ways in which artists can help to think about and interpret those differences and similarities. Rhôd Artists’ Group undertakes curatorial projects that reflect the interests of the group members.

As a bodyworker for nearly 30 years, it has been my privilege to touch other people’s lives through the medium of massage. It is alongside my ongoing clinical practice that I continue to explore different narratives through process art.
Touch attests to objective reality, in the sense of something outside, that is not myself. And yet, by the very fact that it attests the not-me more than any other sense, touch involves my subjectivity more than any other sense. When I feel this objective something ‘out there,’ beyond the bounds of my body, I also at the same time experience my own self. I feel other and self simultaneously. Walter Ong
Show and Tell, is open to view for one day, as the culmination of a week long process. In which I will hold the space to explore the unseen and unspoken stories that are carried in the body through bodywork, photography and text.

Glenn Carney’s new work is based on out-of-season West Wales. The work is memory based and uses bold colour as direct expression of emotion. Inspiration is drawn from remote places, while considering the human imprint. Many of the paintings are on copper sheet, sometimes also using gold leaf. Den Foley creates figurative alabaster sculpture.
Exhibiting widely during the last 10 years, Glenn and Den welcome this opportunity to meet art enthusiasts.

Paintings and mixed media work by a survivor.
What doesn’t kill u makes u stronger.

The Roath Brook Orchestra is a brand new ensemble made up of the talented students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Many of us live within and around the community and it is with much excitement that we our bringing a concert of classical music into the very heart of Roath to celebrate the festival and round off a week of incredible events.
We love working in new and unconventional spaces, to allow everyone access to the music that we are passionate about and we cannot wait to fill the Old Laundry with music from across the centuries to toast madeinroath! Suitable for all ages, come along to hear us as we celebrate!
