I am an artist living in the Roath area. I started painting 7 years ago when my youngest started school full time. I am self taught so I wanted to see how my work could develop as I gave myself more time to explore and experiment.  I love walks along coast lines, through woods or up mountains and these are the main inspiration for my work. I paint in oils and acrylics and enjoy experimenting with colour. I always hope my work enables a person to feel part of the place and draws their imagination into a similar time they may have visited a beach, walked along a part of our beautiful Welsh coastline or clambered up one of our rugged mountains. Mike Murray’s digital prints are a direct digital response to selected churches within the Roath area. The buildings were specifically chosen for their intriguing architecture and current function.  The works are a creative response to how these historic buildings are used today, making references to natural intervention and globalism. The piece aims to create questions about the change in belief and function of the buildings and our relationship to the natural world.  Churches are historically buildings that provide a social hub.  As our beliefs have changed, these buildings have adapted.

What is art if not a gift? Few artists are economically sustained by their practice yet are compelled to continually make and offer their artworks to all willing and less willing individuals. Sue Hunt and Susan Adams explore offering through a collaborative piece involving prints, silverpoint drawings and sculpture, with an opportunity to pass on the gift by giving an offering to Mind Cymru.

By choosing to show the work in a church, Hunt and Adams have drawn a parallel between the sacred space of the gift (calling to mind Lewis Hyde’s remarkable book The Gift : how the creative spirit transforms the world) and contemplation of the sublime. Hunt’s prints evoke the circular form of the communion wafer while Adams’ sculpture echoes medieval ecclesiastical sculpture.

This explorative piece marks there first collaboration , during which seeds will be sown for future development.

Annette Marie Townsend is a Welsh artist from Cardiff, who designs and makes bespoke pieces inspired by the natural world. Her work expresses a fascination with intricate detail, beauty, pattern and textures and draws direct reference to her experience in preserving, documenting and storing scientific specimens in a museum context. She explores playfully with scale and uses her extensive knowledge of traditional and modern design materials to push boundaries, creating innovative new collections.

Her Etched Entomology series was inspired by research in the scientific collections at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and combines techniques which are normally used in printmaking, printed circuit board manufacturing and jewellery design. Images are drawn directly onto a copper surface, which is then etched, oxidised, sanded, scratched and polished. Each finished piece displays unique variations in the surface patina and intricate, shining copper details.

A research space exploring touch, tactility and surface; the exhibition presents the work of artists and designers, who have a cultivated a ‘sensitivity to material’ in their work. Accumulatively, they acknowledge the subjectivity of touch and construct it in new ways; hinging our understanding on a nostalgia for past sensations and consistent yearning to experience new ones.

Featuring work by James Cocks, Ella Mai Downes, Gweni Llwyd and Beth Elen Roberts, each artist or designer explores elements of touch, tactility and surface, to address our digital, gendered, cultural and historical construction of the senses.

The exhibition will include open discussions and dialogues between inter-disciplinary researchers.

I’m interested in the search we all have to find meaning in our lives. Sometimes life feels like a very long journey and although we are often travelling with significant others we invariably return to the self and the eternal questions Who am I? Why am I here? What have I done? Have I made a difference? All of these questions are explored through my drawing. By the way, what is success? How do we measure it? And what is fulfilment?

I’ll be drawing on location in the Ride My Bike Cafe on 15 October, I’ll photograph the installation and share on Instagram #MiRoath #bikecafeart #longertables. The drawings would be presented as a continuous narrative laid out like a table.

Cerys is interested in how we engage with unfamiliar places; how we map space both physically and through a series of interactions, making place and space constructs that exist differently for each individual. Cerys is asking you to walk her to landmarks, sights or objects that are of some import to you for any reason, so that she may begin to map the area through these stories. Carlota Nobrega and Gweni Llwyd present new work inspired by a game where you put as many marshmallows as you can in your mouth, and try to say the words ‘Fuzzy Bunny’.

Both artists use multiple medias, and despite having diverse starting points, their work comes together to share a layered, textured and sensual outcome.

Carlota, working with video, painting and sculpture explores and experiments with the concept of abjection in relation to the body. Gweni’s practice revolves around the mundane, the sensory and the absurd, often using memories from her childhood, previous sculptures and online video databases, approaching her practice as a multidisciplinary collage of stuff.

A group of colourfield, minimal and hard-edge paintings born from themes close to the artists. These themes consist of the human condition, social structures and western culture.

The works while completed, only display what is necessary. This is for the painting to be explored and not forced upon by the viewer. Making this an active experience rather than a passive one. The paintings serve as a cues for the viewer to relate to.

The materials consist of oil paint and additives. The use of primers and sizes support stability and longevity. These are two factors that heavily inform the artist’s work.

Join the parade of community designed flags created over the past couple of months in collaboration with artist James Cocks and madeinroath’s CREATE co-ordinator Pip Tudor as we walk as a community through the streets and parks of Roath. The route will take in festival venues and sights, as well as important places for the community with entertainment along the way.

The walk will end at Inkspot, a 2017 festival hub, where there will be food and drink and a chance to sit and talk before kicking the festival off in style that evening with our opening night party ‘Congregation.’

The tea pavilion created for madeinroath 2017 will be an immersive space within which artist Tessa Waite will offer one visitor at a time a cup of tea. A simple tea ceremony performed within the space will offer the visitor full attention, and the possibility for quiet contemplation and connection. In doing so the person is valued and cherished.

The concepts behind the Japanese tea ceremony – such as the act of giving from the heart – alongside other tea ceremonies or rituals that are common to many cultures form the basis of this work. Participating in the tea encounter would offer possible connections to the rituals of those who participate, both past and present. It is also about creating a simple yet stimulating shelter within which participants can step out of their daily life and experience an act of giving and receiving.

‘Fluro’ is a duo of new fluorescent paintings by Charlotte Formosa. Visit in the daytime to view the artworks in full colour under white light. Visit in the evening to see the paintings come to life with glowing ultraviolet colour.

My work is informed by my research on the use of ultraviolet materials in contemporary underground subcultures, despite the medium’s frequent dismissal as a relic of the 1970s.

My work brings ultraviolet back into a gallery space. These paintings and illustrations feature intricate geometric patterns in bold, garish colours. In these ultraviolet pieces, the aim is to mesmerise the viewer using unusual lighting effects. By combining fluorescent paint with non-reactive acrylic paint, the depth of the artwork appears altered with some planes of colour seeming to float in front of others on the canvas.

A cabinet full of wearable UV art will also be on display for sale!

An exhibition and workshop for all ages run by Chinese born artist Peng Su, now a Roath local. Peng practised ink painting with his great-grandfather Baozhang. He studies nature for the small details and imperfections- choosing to include in his pieces that which many remove for decorative perfection. Having learned how different the Asian art styles are from what is traditionally taught in the UK, he now enjoys sharing the techniques with others.

This exhibition is inspired by my own community of Brynmill, in Swansea, which has been hollowed out by the proliferation of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs). These streetscapes focus on the summer months each year, when most of the students are absent, leaving this strange transient silence and sudden emptiness. There is an ominous aspect to each of these images and the intruding shadows hint at the transience of this peace. The shadows of pitched roofs of houses, chimneys and lamp posts, evoke memories of sun dials, one of the most ancient methods of marking time. Equally they too mark the absence of families and a balanced community. So, there is an underlying sadness here too.

This was the starting point for work by Unity and Rufus Mufasa – a visual, verbal exploration of a changing world. Gentrification, the ageing process, graffiti, motherhood and mother nature all feature among the words, sounds, images and items the pair have created for the cafe space at Inkspot. Visual work is on show all week, with four evening performances.

Rhydypennau Library Portrait is a voluntary project that began in June and is ongoing and growing. I have been offering to draw a pencil portrait of the visitors to the library and they have been sketched between 5 minutes and up to an hour or so, depending on how much time the sitter has to give. Volunteers have been aged between 0 and 90, many taking part in some of the brilliant groups and events offered at the library. The sitter can take away a photocopy of their portrait, while the original drawings have been collected together to create one big portrait, displayed in the order that they have been drawn. This I hope celebrates and reflects the library’s vibrant community spirit as well as the daily comings and goings, from the very regular regulars, to those who might pass through just once.

This exhibition showcases drawings and wax sculptures of human anatomy. It derives from the artist’s work internationally in medical museums, dissection labs and operating theatres. Far from being gruesome or morbid, the exhibition demonstrates how a symbiotic relation between artistic expression and scientific knowledge has the potential to evoke profound emotion.

The idea behind ‘A Long Table of Curiosities’ resonates with the MiR theme of  ‘longer tables’ in that it breaks down walls that are often built between art and science and opens up the question of how we as humans can be, simultaneously, so very different and yet very much the same.

‘Fluro’ is a duo of new fluorescent paintings by Charlotte Formosa. Visit in the daytime to view the artworks in full colour under white light. Visit in the evening to see the paintings come to life with glowing ultraviolet colour.

My work is informed by my research on the use of ultraviolet materials in contemporary underground subcultures, despite the medium’s frequent dismissal as a relic of the 1970s.

My work brings ultraviolet back into a gallery space. These paintings and illustrations feature intricate geometric patterns in bold, garish colours. In these ultraviolet pieces, the aim is to mesmerise the viewer using unusual lighting effects. By combining fluorescent paint with non-reactive acrylic paint, the depth of the artwork appears altered with some planes of colour seeming to float in front of others on the canvas.

A cabinet full of wearable UV art will also be on display for sale!
